The Porters and Their Antiques Road Show

I recently battled a four week stint of migraine induced by anxiety and stressed. Still waiting to see my nuerologist for further instruction, but the most wonderful thing happened last Saturday. After being in complete misery for four weeks to the day, I woke up with absolutely no sign of migraine at all. I couldn't believe how good I felt! It was marvelous!

There is one slight drawback to recovery for me - when I feel better, I'm like a racehorse let out of the chute - full speed ahead and there's no stopping me. My husband knows of this full well and while he will gently warn me, he also knows it rarely does much good. Having been cooped up in the house exept for the occasion doctor visit or medical test, I was raring to go and do something fun.

So we did. We hopped in the car and went to Turlock where we went to two estate sales and then had lunch at the Bistro downtown and then visited two antique stores. Well, the second antique store held us captive for quite some time. Not only is Trinkets to Treasures beautifully laid out, there is a tremendous number of items to choose from at incredibly reasonable prices. We went into the store to just look around, mainly for tables and chairs for our library we recently remodeled. What we came home with was a fabulous dining room set with four chairs plus two captains chairs in a style we'd always wants for a price we couldn't pass up. In addition, we found a unique coffee table and reading chair for the library we fell in love with. That was Saturday.

Today, we went to Bubala's in Atwater and picked out a curio, and end table and discovered the most unusual green leather reader's chair we'd not noticed when we were there before, and a sweet brown velvet foot stool to go with it. That was the first run down there. While we were looking at other things in the store, we went into one of the rooms where we knew a set of chairs had been and had seen they were moved into another area so we were curious to see what she had put in their place. We fell in love the with couch and love seat that were there. We really didn't think we could pull it off, so we pretty much dismissed the idea and brought home most of the items we could, knowing we would be back for the curio cabinet once she had gotten it emptied.

Well, we talked and looked and rearranged,,and talked some more, and we figured out how we could pull off getting the French Provincial love seat and matching couch and the wonderful metal artwork that I had had my eye one the first time I'd gone into the store. So when we returned to the store to pick up the curio cabinet, I told her we were getting the set. She gave me this great big hug and it will be delivered tomorrow. We are going to be giving away and/or selling a lot of pieces of furniture to make this work, but that's OK - it's time for a change. We are about to tear out our carpeting in the living room and replace it with wood laminate and these two pieces just happen to have wood trim around the front. It's going to look wonderful. There's also a coffee table and two matching end tables she gave us a great deal on, as well.

All these things, ALL these things, we haven't spent more than $1500 on! and our house has taken on such new life and character and we have had such fun going to these places and looking at al these things. It's been wonderful. I've always appreciated and respected antiques but they have never been something I ever thought I wanted in my home. I have several that have been in my family and are very dear to me, but what has transpired over the past few days has taken on new meaning to me and a life of its own. We are in love with these old things!

Tomorrow things get delivered. Who knows what will hapen on Wednesday! We only got through two of the stores in Turlock and there are a lot more and we still need an end table and a few other odds and ends. Our Antique Road Show may not be over just yet! And that's just fine with us!

As soon as we have everything in place, I'll post pics here so you can see all our treasures!
